Mental health services
in Western Australia are expanding rapidly with
additional funding of $173.4 million being provided
over three years.
The Mental Health
Strategy 2004 – 2007 was launched in
October 2004 and consists of five key initiatives
to address mental health demand. Key initiatives
will address:
- the expansion of statewide mental health emergency
services;
- increasing access to adult inpatient beds
for people with severe mental illness;
- the expansion of community mental health services
for adults;
- enhancing service coverage and accessibility
for young people by providing a whole of service/government
approach to ensure that young people with a
mental health problem are given the best opportunities
for early intervention;
- supported community accommodation for people
with severe mental illness; and
- ensuring that services are adequately staffed
with the appropriate skills and discipline mix
and that mental health services are safe places
where innovative clinical practice is fostered.
The creation of the Mental
Health Network establishes a framework for
greater collaboration of all mental health stakeholders.
The
Minister for Health and the Western Australian
Government are committed to ensuring we continue
to improve our services to the consumer.
